OntarioOntario has a FIT policy, enacted in the The Green Energy and Green Economy Act (GEA) - May 14, 2009.
The multifaceted law required new programs for energy conservation and authorized the Minister of Energy to call for new sources of renewable energy through a system of feed-in tariffs. The full details of the feed-in tariff scheme have yet to be confirmed, but some aspects are summarized below and the draft regulations and price structure can be viewed.
All types of renewable energy sources are included which means,"an energy source that is renewed by natural processes and includes wind, water, biomass, biogas, biofuel, solar energy, geothermal energy, tidal forces and such other energy sources as may be prescribed by the regulations, but only if the energy source satisfies such criteria as may be prescribed by the regulations for that energy source”.
The Act also sets out a Mandatory connection to transmission or distribution system where the owner of a renewable energy generating facility requests it. The maximum generating capacity will vary depending on the type of RES. A draft price schedule was published in March 2009 along with draft rules for the scheme.
An interesting aspect of the legislation is the creation within the Ministry, of a Renewable Energy Facilitation Office. The objects of the Office are to facilitate the development of renewable energy projects, and more specifically “To work with proponents of renewable energy projects and other ministries to foster the development of renewable energy projects across Ontario and to assist proponents with satisfying the requirements of associated approval processes and procedures, including providing proponents with information in respect of interactions with local communities”.
