State Representative Kathleen Law (D-Gibraltar) introduced the Michigan Renewable Energy Sources Act, HB 5218 on September 15, 2007. The bill was referred to the Energy and Technology Committee the same day.
The bill would require utilities to purchase electricity generated from renewable sources such as wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, landfill gas, sewage treatment gas, biofuel and biomass, and connect the electricity to the grid. Under the bill, generators would enter into power purchase agreements of 20 years or more. The bill proposes wind tariffs differentiated by wind resource intensity.
