In 2007, Hungary has introduced a new feed-in tariff legislation, Act No. LXXXVI of 2007 (2007. évi LXXXVI. törvény a villamos energiáról).
According to Art. 13 grid operators are obliged to purchase renewable-energy-sourced electricity and pay a guaranteed price. The rates for various sources of renewable energy are guaranteed until the year 2020. Preferential rates exist for small scale generators and for peak rates. The grid operators may pass the costs to the consumers, thus the costs for the scheme are borne by the electricity users and not by the state budget. Rates are adjusted yearly to the inflation rate.
