Meeting technical and safety standards

Connecting to the grid and feeding-in electricity are serious activities. Technical and safety issues need to be addressed. Countries or regions have their own rules that apply to all electricity producers, and these rules need to be complied with by renewable energy producers. Many countries also have their own standards bodies.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), based in Geneva, publishes international standards for several renewable technologies. To date, they have produced standards for water (rivers and oceans), sun and wind, a certification scheme for solar PV, and are currently considering a certification scheme for wind turbines.

A good FIT law will not, and often legally cannot, discriminate against renewable energy producers, and it is important that the need to meet technical and safety standards is not used by the relevant authorities to block or delay connection and feed-in. The rules must be applied fairly.
